Kiondo baskets are handwoven by women's self help groups in rural villages of Machakos county near Nairobi, Kenya. Made from sisal and food grade plastic, the weaving of sisal Kiondo baskets is a traditional Kenyan handcraft. These clever baskets swallow up any untidy clutter of objects you have managed to create and are particularly good for storing toys, firewood, magazines, loo roll, towels or clothes. They can also be used to put plant pots in, making an ordinary plant pot look stylish and distinctive. The storage baskets are extremely handy, robust and versatile, making them great helpers in organising the home. Part of our Storage collection, the Kiondos are by Mifuko, a design company founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers, Mari Martikainen and Minna Impiö. The company operates between Finland and Kenya, and follows fair trade principles in producing goods in partnership with self-help groups and workshops that employ slum youth, people with disabilities and people with economically disadvantaged rural backgrounds. A certified member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) Mifuko's production is also environmentally sustainable. Click here to read more about Mifuko in the Our Makers section of our site.
