This Spalted Walnut Bowl is a beautiful handmade wooden bowl with a characterful spalted grain and natural live edge. The spalting creates unique lines, streaks and varying colour in the wood caused by fungal decay. The piece of Walnut used for the bowl came from a branch that was taken down following storm damage to a large Walnut tree less than half a mile from my workshop.
A unique one-off piece, the Spalted Walnut Bowl will make a beautiful decorative display bowl or trinket bowl, adding texture and warmth to your home. The wooden bowl measures 20cm in diameter at its widest point and the height of the walls vary from 10cm in height to 3.5cm. The bowl was turned as unseasoned 'green wood' and therefore the shape of the bowl changed as it dried resulting in a more organic shape.
Once the bowl was turned, it was sanded by hand to provide a smooth finish and then coated with a food safe wood wax to help protect the bowl. An example of handmade British craftsmanship, this special piece will look fantastic on a side cabinet, shelving, tabletop or kitchen side, whether in a contemporary or traditional home, and would make a very nice gift. The bowl was designed and made by hand by Alastair Matthews, in my workshop near Saffron Walden in Essex.
