This small Walnut Bowl is a beautiful handmade wooden bowl with a characterful, natural live edge that still retains the bark. The piece of Walnut used for the bowl came from a branch that was taken down following storm damage to a large Walnut tree less than half a mile from my workshop. The unseasoned 'green' wood was turned within a month of the branch coming down and then left to dry. As the bowl dried it has changed shape creating a lovely organic form. Now stable, the wood remains untreated so the beauty of the wood's grain and natural colour can be appreciated and enjoyed.
A unique one-off piece, the Live Edge Walnut Bowl will make a beautiful decorative display bowl or trinket bowl, adding texture and warmth to your home. The small wooden bowl measures 13.5cm in diameter at its widest point and 12.5cm at others, the height of the 1.8cm thick walls vary from 8.5cm in height to 5.5cm. Parts of the bowl containing knots have a slight undulating surface due to drying at different speeds and thus resulting in slight warping.
Once the bowl was turned, it was sanded by hand to provide a smooth finish. An example of handmade British craftsmanship, this special piece will look fantastic on a side cabinet, shelving, tabletop or kitchen side, whether in a contemporary or traditional home, and would make a very nice gift. The bowl was designed and made by hand by Alastair Matthews, in my workshop near Saffron Walden in Essex.
